So what do craigslist and plants have in common? I’m fond of them both, particularly after I scored a number of free houseplants last week. There is just something so incredibly fun about scoring something you’ve been wanting for free.

The day started out normal enough; I was goofing off, browsing around the “Free” section of my local craigslist when I say the ad for houseplants. “Oh, I wonder what they have,” I though as I clicked on the link. A quick look and a phone call is all it took for a nice lady to pass off 5 different plants to me. Conveniently enough, the pick-up place was only 5 minutes away so my dear husband ran over there while he was out and about. What did I receive you may wonder. Well…I’m actually wondering that too! I know that one is a spider plant (which I’ve been wanting), one is a geranium, and one is a vine of some sort; I have no clue about the other two. I plan on doing a bit of research to find out exactly what they are but this past week has been a bit crazy and I’m pretty sure this coming week will be as well so it will probably have to wait.
Other than not being sure what some of them are, I also have to find a place to put them. The way our windows are set up in the house does not lend itself to a large amount of direct sunlight. Our house faces south; we have 1 window that faces east and none that face west. The kids’ rooms are the ones that get the most direct sunlight so maybe I should just pile all of the plants in their rooms? That might actually be worse for the plants than my not to stellar caretaking (which I am attempting to get better at). Hmmm… maybe after I find out exactly what these plants are I will be able to better determine the amount of sunlight they need. Some of them look a little rundown but perhaps I can coax them to grow.
Hopefully these 5 little freebies will help me get better at taking care of plants and learning about them. I’m excited to watch them grow and excited to expand my knowledge of plant life and to share that knowledge with my children. Happy gardening, I’m off to see if I can find some more free plants!
